Many people choose to use medication to lower high triglycerides however many people don't want to use medicine because there can be side effects, lowering triglycerides with medicine can be expensive, and once you go off the mediciation your triglycerides will go back up. However before we got to how to reduce your high triglycerides lets discuss what triglycerides are. Triglycerides are a type of lipid, very similar to cholestrol. Your body naturally creates triglycerides from food you eat and are very important for your health as they become stored enery in your body. This stored energy is important because in times of sickness you may need the extra energy to help your recover. Therefore having SOME triglycerides are good for you, however having high triglycerides can increase your risk for heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. To start lowering your elevated triglycerides you should stay away from foods that have high triglycerides. You are going to want to stay away from food with lots of sugar and fat. These foods have high levels of triglycerides that your body will convert and store as excess energy, which will of course lead to elevated levels of triglycerides. This makes triglycerides very similar to cholestrol. Cholestrol is also very important to ensure a healthy life, however if you have excess cholestrol it can be dangerous to your health as it also causes increased risk of hearth disease, heart attack, and stroke.



If you are trying to lower triglycerides without medicine you should also stay away from alcohol as it can be high in fat and increase your total triglycerides.  Excess alcohol can also increase your weight which is not a good thing when trying to decrease your triglycerides.



Another way to decrease high triglycerides is to stay at a healthy weight. When you are overweight your body converts more triglycerides from the food you eat. This is not a good thing if you are trying to decrease your triglycerides as not matter what you do your body will continue to create more triglycerides. The best way to lose weight and keep it off is to eat healthy. You should eat lots of fruit and vegetables as they will stop hunger while giving you lots of energy and promote an active life style. You should have a diet high in fiber and whole wheat.  However simply eating healthy won't allow you to lose any meaningful weight, in order to really lose weight you must excercise. Excercising allows you to burn calories which will cause less of it to become stored as body fat, decreasing your weight. However, excercising doesn't only decrease your weight it also decreases your triglycerides. So leading an active lifestyle is very important as it can decrease weight and triglycerides.
